sin turistas workshops & collective with avenue 50 studio would like to invite you to the first ever open photo critique. come to share a photography project or comment and discuss others work.

“the critique is a major portion of the learning process. it is a space where we get to present our work in an honest environment of comrades and fans that will praise and critique without judgment. as creators we can observe the reaction to the voice of the work we created. as participants, it is a chance to deconstruct the images through discussion and from another viewpoint. for everyone it is a chance to influence our own work with other ideas about photography.”

[featured photographers: dana collins & isabel avila]
dana collins is a professor of sociology and studies the ideas of space and community in the malete neighbourhood of manila, the philippines. isabel avila is a documentary photographer working on a series of portraits that study the overlapping nature of native american and chicano cultures in california and the west.

this is a free event and open to everyone who appreciates photography, but a small donation ($1-2) to cover refreshments would be greatly appreciated. if you are interested in presenting some work, please contact us. or, if you would like to attend please RSVP at our facebook event page.

sin turistas photography workshops seek to document and express highland park’s changing environment. this first exhibition is a collection of abstract expressionist and urban landscapes summoning the hidden spaces of los angeles. these images traverse the avenues and the boulevards of highland park. photographs are scaled to 3’x4’ and express the layers of its residents colliding with themselves; others revealing the time of past, present and future; and, still others defining the boundaries of living of life in LA. their stories are told in the symbols and scenes as well as the official and subversive street signs.

"sights and sounds of highland park" the one day workshop of sin turistas will be heading to east los angeles and the neighbourhood where the murals “the story of our struggle” are located. across the street are the pan american bank mosaics “our past, our present and our future.” this is a thriving, colourful and textured latino business district surrounded by a old residential neighbourhood.

our last visit we were only able to explore about two blocks around it and meet a few residents. this time we hope to cover a little more ground. we’ll meet at a café for a brief discussion about the assignment for the day and then jump on the nearest the metro to our destination. if time allows we’ll stop for snacks and beverages somewhere around our destination. space is limited, too large a group and it becomes a disruptive and invasive journey, so please sign up early.

victor has a special exercise planned to challenge our skills. it is also a great opportunity to watch and speak to a photographer who spends his time shooting the streets in a very intimate way.

we’ll meet at a private studio of a local artists which is rarely open to the public and discuss some qualities of great photography, a brief history of some expressive photography and a camera review for any novices in the group. victor will explain his diabolical challenge for the day and then we will go out into highland park and shoot. upon our return we’ll review and critique everyone’s images!
